I’ll have to say that learning how to program and design for computer games is a lot tougher than it sounds. I dabbled in it a few years ago with OpenGL programming, but didn’t manage to do more than the simple stuff. While these college courses probably attempt to teach you all of that and more, creating pc games is getting easier and easier through tools. It’s much easier to make mods to existing games, and they even have tools now to create entire role-playing games. I’m guessing that soon tools will be released so that the “average” geek could create his own game experience and release it to the public, basically becoming the game masters of the D&D days.

We all now know that the Unreal Tournament 2007 game was renamed to Unreal Tournament 3, but here’s the brand new trailer showing it off. The guns look as good as ever, but the enemies look even more detailed than in the past. After today’s events it is also rumored that the game will release this Christmas.

Christmas? What have they been doing for all of this time. There will be (and have been) several great games that have come out using the Unreal 3 engine and Unreal can’t even get their own game out.

Save your local gaming shop

This week in Geek in Review, Wil Wheaton talks about saving your local shop.

While you may be able to get 10% off if you use your preferred customer card at the bookstore in the mall, is cranky manager guy going to take the time to talk with you, and suggest a graphic novel you may have missed, like Kinetic?

While you may be able to save a few bucks on the latest d20 source book in that same bookstore (if they stock it, that is) don’t count on stumbling across any new games, like the boxed version of Kill Doctor Lucky, or High School Drama. And I can guarantee you that the bookstore in the mall won’t stay open late because the owner really wants to do a Shadowrun one-off, and will provide pizza and Mountain Dew for any players who show up this Friday at 7.

Good stuff.

80,000 votes. 4,000 mods. Over the course of 2 months, gamers from across the globe came together to decide which mods rank as the epitome of what our hard working community can do. Now, gallons of blood and sweat later, we tell you what triumphed in 2006.

Congratulations to Black Mesa for winning this award. I’m definitely checking out this mod very soon. PC Gaming developers continue to amaze me with all of their hard work and dedication to modding games for free.

Rappelz Review

Gamecron PC Gaming has a review of Rappelz up at their site.  This is a free MMORPG that looks a lot like World of Warcraft to me, and apparently has pretty good gameplay.  This looks like it’s worth checking out if you love MMORPG’s and can’t afford one of the pay to play MMORPG’s.
